Dear Jenny, you have three daughters, a partner named Moritz and two dogs. You also present Georg Hornemann's extraordinary jewelry at the Esel Galerie in Kampen. All of this together sounds like a varied, colorful everyday life. What's your favorite way to start your day?

Very slowly and comfortably with a hot cup of black coffee. Moritz and I then sit in the kitchen in our robes and look out of the window – watching the day begin. I’ll be honest, if this routine is disrupted, the rest of the day is ruined. We always take a lot of time to start the day. As a result, it’s not uncommon for it to suddenly be later than planned and for me to drive my daughters to school in the car, still dressed in their robes. One of my daughters once said: “Oh man, all my friends know my mother in her robe.” The neighbors also know me like this, namely when I have to catch my dogs at this early time of day and often wear my robe. After all the children have gone to school and the dogs have returned home, my day begins.

Your day usually continues at the Esel Galerie in Kampen. You've been here for a few years now. How did it come about that the Esel Galerie exists and that you present Georg Hornemann's jewelry artworks there?

Actually from a flax. I have known Alexander Hornemann, son of Georg Hornemann, since my youth. My mother and grandmother have also been customers and friends of Hornemann for decades. One day, Alexander and I were out for lunch in Kampen. Our destination was opposite the current Esel Galerie. So we sat there in the restaurant and looked at this enchanting little corner house opposite. The shop was empty and they were looking for a tenant. I spontaneously thought of opening a store there to showcase Georg Hornemann’s jewelry. No sooner said than done. Alexander was just as enthusiastic about the idea as I was. We sealed the deal with a handshake after our lunch. We are now in our third year of running this store together, which is a gem in itself.

What fascinates you about jewelry? Why do you like wearing jewelry yourself?

I am fascinated by the aesthetic individuality and precision craftsmanship that jewelry can have. By this I mean pieces of jewelry that have been created by true master craftsmen and are like works of art in life. In addition, very small editions are of great importance to me so that people can remain individual with these pieces of jewelry. A large edition, which then enjoys great popularity, somehow makes these valuable items inflationary. I myself love wearing jewelry – I’ve always been a jewelry junkie. On the one hand because of the very simple fact that special pieces of jewelry can give people a glow, i.e. for aesthetic reasons. Then, of course, there is the emotional significance, because I associate all my pieces of jewelry with moments that are linked to special memories. I have always bought jewelry from Georg Hornemann because it is always very extravagant. The very small editions are also extraordinary and make the jewelry so special.

When the Esel Galerie is off work - what does arriving home mean to you and how do you prefer to spend your free time?

A day like this is often long – and yet it’s over quickly. In the evening, we usually review the day over dinner with the family. In winter, we usually just snuggle up on the sofa afterwards. In summer, I prefer to spend my free time with my family on the beach or with the dogs in nature on the mudflats. Sylt offers the perfect backdrop for this, just as I love it. And – believe it or not – I enjoy nature and life on Sylt at any time of year! We often have friends over at the weekend. Moritz is a particularly good cook and it’s not uncommon for these evenings to end in a cheerful dinner party – there’s laughter and dancing.

Jenny Zimmerer, a native of Reinland, worked for years in her own family business, in the shoe industry, and moved to Sylt in 2020. At home, she likes to wear a velvet robe from MyMorgenrock.
